Huddersfield Town have paid tribute to lifelong supporter Sir Patrick Stewart following his death at the age of 86. The club described the actor, who was last pictured watching them play at Crawley in November 2024, as a titan of his craft and a legend and hero to millions worldwide.
Sir Patrick died at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by his wife Sunny, after a brief battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. In a statement, Huddersfield Town said he was fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots and a Terrier in every sense, and they were proud to have counted him as one of their own.
A 70-year connection
The connection to the club began when he was seven years old, growing up in a working-class family in Mirfield, West Riding of Yorkshire. He remained a devoted fan throughout his rise to international fame, which saw him knighted for services to drama and become best known for starring in Star Trek and X-Men.
Stewart once said he had been a fan for 70 years and got the same rush when walking up the steps of any stadium. His final public appearance supporting the Terriers came on November 9, 2024.
Current Terriers flying high
The tribute comes as the current Huddersfield Town side sits proudly at the top of League One, with a lead over Stockport County and on a winning run, a form that would have delighted their most famous fan. The team has accumulated 25 points from 12 games, with a record of seven wins and four draws, and is two points clear at the summit. Their recent form is formidable, with four wins and a draw from their last five matches, including a 2-1 victory over Wigan on Saturday 24 October. In that match, Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes scored the goals. The team has scored 24 goals this season while conceding only 11.
The team's strong start is spearheaded by top scorer Joe Taylor, who has eight goals in 11 appearances this season. His recent brace in the 4-1 win over Peterborough on Tuesday 20 October was a highlight of the team's current three-game winning run.
Sir Patrick Stewart's legacy as a global icon and a local supporter endures, his passion for the club a constant thread from the terraces of his youth to the Hollywood spotlight. Huddersfield Town host Cambridge United at the John Smith's Stadium.
