Huddersfield Town secured a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic to climb to the summit of League One. Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes scored the goals that sealed a third consecutive win for Martin Drury's side.
The Terriers now lead the division with 25 points from 12 games, sitting two points clear of Stockport County.
Bronkhorst opened the scoring in the 34th minute, finishing from a Cameron Humphreys assist. The lead was doubled late on when Fernandes, who also provided an assist in the 4-1 win over Peterborough last week, struck in the 80th minute after a pass from Marcus Harness. Wigan's Christian Saydee scored a consolation in stoppage time.
Head coach Martin Drury praised his team's adaptability after the match. "It was really difficult," Drury said. "We watched Wigan’s last six games and prepared for how we thought they’d set up and what we expected them to do, then they turned up on the day and did something completely different."
For Wigan, the defeat compounds their struggles as they remain rooted to the bottom of the standings. Their misery was worsened by a suspension for on-loan Manchester City midfielder Charlie Gray. The 20-year-old substitute picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, triggering an automatic one-match ban.
Wigan manager Gary Caldwell was critical of the player's disciplinary record, which has seen him booked in each of his last five appearances. "It's remarkable," Caldwell said of the accumulation.
Joe Taylor remains Huddersfield's top scorer this season with eight goals. The team's next challenge is a significant away trip to face third-placed Bradford City on October 31st.
