Huddersfield Town coach Martin Drury has highlighted the club's improved squad depth as a key factor in their strong start to the League One season. The Terriers, who sit second in the table with 22 points from 11 games, handled a recent injury crisis with impressive contributions from players stepping into the starting lineup. Their record of six wins, four draws and a single loss from those 11 games has put them in a strong position.
Drury pointed specifically to the performances of centre-backs Joe Low and Sean Roughan, who made their first league starts of the 2026-27 campaign in the 2-0 win at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday 17 October. Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Bojan Radulovic scored the goals that day. The team had seven players unavailable for that fixture, but the defensive duo helped secure a clean sheet.
"I was really pleased for them because they're really good people and I know how hard they've been working," Drury said of Low and Roughan.
The coach stressed the importance of keeping all squad members sharp, not only fit. "It's really important they're still practicing the actions they need in a game and it's not just based on load and hitting numbers to keep them fit," he explained. He noted that this includes specific work on goal minutes, a key performance metric for the coaching staff. Drury added that managing the frustration of players not in the team is a vital part of building a positive culture, something reflected in the squad's body language during goal celebrations.
This resilience has been evident in a recent run of four wins and a draw from the last five matches, putting them on a two-game winning run. The latest was a commanding 4-1 victory over Peterborough United at the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday 20 October, where striker Joe Taylor scored twice to take his season tally to six goals, making him the club's top scorer. Ilias Bronkhorst, Taylor with his second, and Bali Mumba were the other scorers in that comprehensive win. The team's form has them firmly in the automatic promotion picture, with a goal difference of +12 from 22 goals scored and only 10 conceded.
With midfielders Ryan Ledson and David Kasumu nearing returns from injury, the options are expanding. The immediate focus is on the next fixture, a home game against Wigan Athletic on Saturday 24 October. Wigan currently prop up the League One standings in 24th place. Another three points would maintain pressure on the teams at the top as Huddersfield look to continue their winning run.
