Owen Dodgson's red card against Huddersfield Town has left him suspended for three matches. The Mansfield Town loanee was sent off just two minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 0-0 draw at the One Call Stadium on September 12.
Nigel Clough, the Mansfield manager, did not contest the decision. The straight red was shown for a reckless challenge on Huddersfield's Derensili Sanches Fernandes. "He’s let people down, especially his teammates," Clough said. "So hopefully he will make up for that in the next eight months."
Clough's assessment
The manager explained the incident as a product of over-eagerness from a young player. "He’s been so keen and I think eager to impress," Clough stated. "He’s a young-ish player and it was born out of that because we haven’t seen any sort of nastiness or that side of him over the seasons we’ve watched him." Clough added that Dodgson must now work hard to regain his spot in the team.
Dodgson, who joined on a season-long loan in August, has since played an hour for the club's B team to maintain fitness during his suspension. He will be unavailable for Mansfield's next three fixtures.
The point secured by the ten-man Stags came against a Huddersfield side sitting second in League One. Their next challenge is a trip to face Bromley, who are 22nd, this Saturday. Check the full fixtures list for all upcoming dates.
For Huddersfield, the draw at Mansfield was part of a solid start that has them just one point behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday. The Terriers have scored ten goals while conceding only four so far this season.
