Owen Dodgson was sent off in less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute for Mansfield Town in their League One match against Huddersfield Town. The dismissal came during a goalless draw at Field Mill last Saturday, a result that kept Huddersfield second in the table.
The summer signing had replaced Stephen McLaughlin at half-time but was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Derensili Sanches Fernandes almost immediately after the restart. Dodgson will now face a suspension, adding to the challenges for Nigel Clough's side.
Huddersfield, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run to five matches with the point. Their recent form reads DWDWW, with three wins and two draws from the last five outings.
Fastest red cards
Dodgson's quick exit prompted questions about the fastest dismissals in the division's history. The record is held by John Marquis, who was sent off just 13 seconds into a game for Doncaster Rovers against Peterborough United during the 2024/25 season. That equalled a mark set 25 years earlier by goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, who saw red 13 seconds into a Sheffield Wednesday match in the 2000/01 campaign.
Other famously quick red cards include Keith Gillespie's dismissal before touching the ball for Sheffield United against Reading in 2007, and Walter Boyd's for Swansea City in 1999, which came before play had even resumed. Huddersfield's focus now shifts to maintaining their strong start, with top scorer J. Taylor having netted five times already this season. Their next fixture is at home this coming Saturday.
