Huddersfield Town are hoping to win the race for Archie Collins, a 26-year-old midfielder who has been a star in League One. The Terriers are in advanced talks to bring Collins to West Yorkshire, according to Pete O'Rourke. Collins spent three years with Peterborough United after signing from Exeter City in 2023. He was subject to plenty of interest this summer, with Championship sides Millwall, Watford, and Portsmouth reportedly keen on the free agent.
Huddersfield Town have made some promising signings this summer amid a rebuild under Martin Drury. The Terriers have spent less compared to last year, and they could be about to recruit their third free agent of the transfer window. Collins' arrival could quickly make Huddersfield Town promotion contenders.
While bringing in some exciting talent this summer, Huddersfield Town have also been efficient at getting rid of players who have been below the standards that have resulted in the Terriers' dropping out of promotion contention. HTAFC remaining in League One does leave them susceptible to Championship clubs poaching some of their stars, though. Derby County have been reported to be eyeing Tom Iorpenda after his impressive loan spell at Notts County.
The Verdict: Collins boosts Huddersfield Town's promotion chances
While losing Iorpenda would be a big blow, Huddersfield Town are signing an experienced and quality midfielder for League One. Collins has been one of Peterborough United's best performers over the last three years. The 26-year-old is better suited to a deeper role in midfield, but his attacking output has always been there. Last season, he scored two goals and provided seven assists in a fairly underwhelming term for the Posh. With better players around Collins, his numbers will inevitably get even better. The midfielder had the likes of Kyrell Lisbie and Harry Leonard around him. At HTAFC, he will have Joe Taylor and Derensili Sanches to assist.
Current Context
As of the start of the new season, Huddersfield Town are 9th in League One, with 67 points from 46 games last season. They have scored 74 goals and conceded 64, with a +10 goal difference. They are 36 points behind leaders Lincoln in the title race.
