Huddersfield Town have confirmed three new appointments to Martin Drury's coaching staff. The Terriers have announced that Dale Tonge and Anton McElhone have joined as assistant head coach and head of medical and performance respectively, while academy director Jon Worthington has also been appointed as director of player development.
What happened?
Dale Tonge was most recently assistant manager at Rotherham United, while the 41-year-old has also had coaching stints with Barnsley, Hearts, Scunthorpe United and Peterborough United. Tonge will assist Drury alongside Jon Stead, who took up the same post on a permanent basis last month.
Why it matters for Huddersfield Town
The new appointments bring a wealth of experience to the Terriers' coaching staff. Anton McElhone has worked at Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, Besiktas, New England Revolution, Bradford City, Greenock Morton and Queen’s Park, as well as Aston Villa Women most recently. Former Town captain and interim boss Jon Worthington maintains his responsibilities as academy director, but has seen his role enhanced to also aid player development at first-team level.
What comes next?
Town’s sporting director Chris Markham told the club’s website: “The formation of the technical staff under Martin was always going to be vitally important, and we set out together – Martin and I – with a specific set of skills and experience that we wanted. Through the appointments of Dale, Anton and Jon – alongside Jon Stead, Chris Elliott and the rest of our staff – we’ve added that.” Drury added: “Throughout the process of becoming head coach, I was clear in how I’d like our coaching staff to be organised. Starting with the appointment of Jon Stead, who I’m delighted to continue working alongside, I felt strongly about recruiting highly-skilled people who share my determination to succeed.”
